February Monthly Meeting: Cargo Bikes for Work, Family and Holidays

Thursday, 23 February 2023 - 7:30pm
In-person in the Clayton Hotel Charlemont, online on Zoom

Over the last 15 years cargo bikes have gone from a novelty to a regular sight on the streets of our cities and towns. These days it’s not unusual to see Cargo bikes being used to ferry children to school, transport goods or deliver our letters & parcels . This month we have gathered a variety of speakers to show how the Cargo bike has become a viable car & van replacement.

  • Neasa Bheilbigh lives in Galway city and always commuted to work by bike. Like many parents, when Neasa had children the thoughts of cycling with them made her nervous but getting a cargo bike 2.5years ago changed this and now the family does their commuting, shopping, visiting and holidaying by cargo bike. Neasa is chairperson of Cyclist.ie.

  • Paddy Byrne from Life Pharmacy D4 has been offering a local delivery service for 30+ years and while the bike has always been the preferred option it hasn’t always been feasible due to the bulk of the items being carried. The ecargo bike has solved this - it has taken a van off the road, saved 750L of diesel and 2025Kg of CO2 emissions. The equivalent of 4 x 40ft containers moved in one year!

  • Astrid van Gelder- Fitzpatrick set up the ‘The Dutch Bike Shop’ in 2011 along with her husband Frank Fitzpatrick. Being a Netherlands native who understands the practicalities of the Dutch cycle culture, Astrid & Frank’s business was one of the first to import cargo bikes into Ireland.

  • Dr. Robbie Egan is a cycling researcher based in the Centre for Transport Research, Trinity College Dublin. Robbie will present on an analysis of an e-cargo bike pilot involving Bleeper, DLRCC, Smart Dún Laoghaire, and Trinity ENABLE. In this six month pilot, e-cargo bikes were rented out at a subsidised rate to small businesses in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, as an alternative delivery vehicle
