Dublin Cycling Campaign has a submission to An Bord Pleanála supporting the proposal to build improved walking, cycling and bus infrastructure along the Malahide Road as part of the BusConnects Core infrastructure works. The proposals will provide a continuous kerb protected cycle route along the entire length of the Malahide Road from Clarehall to Griffith Avenue, where it will connect to the cycle lanes currently under construction at Marino. It will change the route from only one suitable for the most confident of cyclists to one suitable to many more types of people. The standard of the infrastructure being proposed is better than anything that currently exists in Dublin today. The quality is higher than normal because of consistent feedback from Dublin Cycling Campaign and the cyclists of Dublin that we need far better cycling infrastructure than just a few painted lines at the side of the road. Without hundreds of Dubliners demanding better infrastructure the quality of this proposal wouldn’t be as high as it is.

However, we have two major issues with the proposed project including the some of the junction designs and the lack of green buffer between the cycle track and the bus lane.

Even after multiple meetings with the National Transport Authority on the proposed junction designs they are pressing ahead with a mix their own junction design in some locations and international standard Cyclops in others. Some of the proposed protected cycle junction designs include dangerous elements that need to be resolved. We are pressing An Bord Pleanála now to change the dangerous junctions to one of the proven international standards
