**** Dublin Cycling Campaign made a submission to Fingal County Council about the alternative proposal for New street, Malahide. This is an intermediate design for Malahide while two options go out to full consultation next year. Option 1 would be full pedestrianization and Option 2 would be pedestrianization during the summer and this alternative proposal after summer time. We believe this will be particularly beneficial to schoolchildren who live in The Marina, which is directly North of New Street, and wish to travel by bike to any of the three local schools located directly south of New Street. Submission to Fingal County Council We are writing to you on behalf of the Fingal Cycling Campaign a subgroup of the Dublin Cycling Campaign which has been advocating for improved cycling infrastructure for Dublin for 26 years and a registered charity #20102029. Dublin Cycling Campaign is a member of Cyclist.ie (www.cyclist.ie), the Irish Cycling Advocacy Network, is the network in Ireland of Cycle Campaign, Bike Festival, and Greenway Groups, and is the Irish member of the European Cyclists’ Federation (www.ecf.com). We want to make Fingal a safe and friendly place for everyone, of all ages, to cycle and walk. Dublin and Fingal Cycling Campaign welcome Fingal County Council’s intent to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in New Street, Malahide, as set out at the link below: https://www.fingal.ie/news/alternative-proposal-developed-new-street-mal…. We particularly welcome the provision of a South-bound physically separated contra-flow cycle lane. We believe this will be particularly beneficial to schoolchildren who live in The Marina, which is directly North of New Street, and wish to travel by bike to any of the three local schools located directly south of New Street.

1. St Andrews National school, on Church Road (R124), has over 300 pupils
2. St. Oliver Plunketts National School on Grove Rd is one of the largest national schools in the country, with over 1200 pupils and is also heavily dependent on Church Road (R124), for access.
3. Malahide Community School (R124), which has over 1500 pupils

It will also benefit people who live south of New Street, work in The Marina area and wish to bike to work (e.g. in the new remote working hub - The View - See: https://theview.ie/) We would ask the council to provide further details of the proposed changes to New Street and how they fit into the provision of improved walking and cycling infrastructure in the Malahide area. We would ask for details of how they will link with the Broadmeadow Way and safe cycle routes to local schools. Dublin Cycling Campaign’s vision for Dublin and surrounding towns and villages like Malahide is to be a vibrant, liveable location where everyone can safely enjoy everyday walking and cycling. A key part of a vibrant and liveable town / village is to create public spaces, like New Street, that are full of life. Our built environment has a huge affect on who and how often people choose to travel sustainably, which has a resulting effect on the built environment. We believe the following are key things to consider for Malahide Village: ● Major review of cycling and walking infrastructure in Malahide and its environs ● Provision of segregated cycling infrastructure in a connected network that all ages and abilities can use ● Improved pedestrian and cycling access to Malahide village, local schools, parks and the train station ● 30 Kmph speed limits for the village and residential streets ● Traffic calming ● Secure, protected bicycle parking at venues, restaurants, parks, sea-swimming locations, local schools and Malahide train station ● Connecting Malahide beach - Malahide Village and surrounding neighbourhoods to the Broadmeadow Way and the Fingal coastal greenway ● Cycling to school is safe and all local schools are connected to the Broadmeadow Way ● Increased permeability around Malahide for pedestrians and cyclists ● Connecting Malahide to Swords, Portmarnock and Kinsealy with all connected to the Broadmeadow Way
