Dutch Style roundabouts discussed at recent Fingal council meetings
Dutch style roundabouts were discussed at a recent full council meeting on January 11th and at the local area meeting for Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart/Castleknock/Ongar Area Committee.
At the full council meeting Cllr Eoghan O’Brien added an amendment to a recent motion on the R132 consultation requesting dutch style roundabouts be considered by the Dept of Transport and the NTA in the future designs of the R132 junction. You can watch the discussion via Fingal County council webcast https://fingalcoco.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/534332 The discussion takes place at 2 hrs 07 mins and in more detail from David Storey, the Director Of Services for Environment, Climate Change & Active Travel at Fingal County Council.at 2hrs 20mins 20seconds. Mr Storey mentioned that the NTA are fully funding the R132 upgrade and currently do not support Dutch style roundabouts. It won’t be possible to incorporate these designs into the R132 project but Mr Storey is hopeful that new designs standards will be issued from Dept of Transport and will keep an eye out for these new standards. The project is currently being submitted to An Bord Pleanála (ABP) under section 177AE. There will be further opportunity for both Cllr’s and members of the public to engage with ABP on the new plans. Cllr Ian Carey spoke in support of the motion/amendment. Unfortunately the current design standards do not facilitate the use of Dutch style designs and are not covered under Irish legislation. It was agreed that Fingal County Council will write to Minister of Transport and the National Transport Authority to use or facilitate a version of dutch style in the proposed plans for the R132 Junction. Its Fingal Cycling Campaigns understanding the current design manual is under review and the new version will include these protected roundabouts for people on bikes.

18 Councillor T. Doyle - Dutch Design Roundabouts. AI055636 “That the Chief Executive liaise with the NTA regarding their project for the upgrading of cycling infrastructure throughout the area with a view to amending the design (where possible) of roundabouts to incorporate the design known as “Dutch Design” and undertake a report on all roundabouts on the Ongar Distributor Road with those being prioritised for redesign.”
