eTextiles and wearables workshop for cyclists (12 places)

As part of The Citizen Cycle, an arts programme for the Velo City Conference, media artist Cliona Harmey is looking for participants to take part in a series of beginners hands-on art workshops which will culminate in the development of an artwork using wearable electronics for the VeloCity Bike Parade. Participants will get to learn about programming and systems based art while developing a series of of portable signs or signalling devices and will experiment with developing “wearables” which will be used during a performance for the VeloCity Parade.

Working with Cliona and using easy to use electronics and everyday objects you will develop a collaborative performative artwork which will respond to the bicycle as a sophisticated and enabling technology. Drawing on the cultural history of the bicycle as a precedent to aeronautics we will playfully use technologies of signalling and display to create an artwork which will open up a dialogue with city dwellers, conference attendees and those who will design the cities of the future, positing the bicycle as the low-carbon cousin of the jumbo jet. The cyclist, like a pilot, maneuvers their bike adjusting their balance and performing sophisticated tactical maneuvers as they navigate the complexities of city space.

We are looking for members of Dublin Cycling Campaign and their friends or associates to take part in this project which will contribute to advocacy around cycling in Dublin. The project will culminate in a work which will take place during the Velo-city week. This project is part of The Citizen Cycle is curated by Michelle Browne and funded by The Arts Council, Dublin City Council and Creative Producers International Investment Fund.

Cliona Harmey works with technology and art. Her work is inspired by histories of technology and communication. She is a lecturer in the Media Department at NCAD and creates work for both galleries and public space. She has many years experience in art education and previously worked as a workshop facilitator at the Education and Community Dept at IMMA.

Workshops will take place at a location close to city centre on 3 Saturdays in May. Places are limited to 12 participants (adults/teenagers over 16 yrs). Please email bikeplanes@gmail.com by May 7th to book a place.

• Participants will need an internet ready computer (mac, pc, chrome) in good repair (smart phone access is a plus but we can also share data).
• Basic computer literacy is a prerequisite.
• Participants need to commit to all 3 workshops and parade prep.
